The main part of high-oleic oil production is used in food applications. As the fatty acid composition is very similar to olive oil, some parts of European high oleic sunflower oil (HOSO) production has been used in olive oil blends. Blending of HOSO with other vegetable oils than olive oil is done e.g. in France, where a company called "Lessieur" is marketing "Iso-Quattre", a well known oil commodity in french supermarkets. In Spain, Koipe is distributing a pure high oileic sunflower oil via retailers to end consumers. The development and distribution of a real HOSO brand is exceptional up to now, maybe this will change in future. A strongly upcoming market is the deep fat frying sector: due to the enhanced oxidative stability and the absence of  , a significant growth of this sector can be observed and growth rates seem to be real high. Meanwhile a range of products is offered from different suppliers to industrial frying companies. In the US, the oil is marketed as speciality in food markets, such as senior or baby nutrition, or as valuable salad and frying oil (cold pressed oils). Like with other vegetable oils, the food market is far bigger in volume than the technical market for HOSO (only about 15% of the produced vegetable oils is used for chem-tech utilisation).
 
 
High Oleic Oils for Nutrition

In human epidemiological studies, scientists have found that diets high in oleic acid are associated with a lower risk of cardiovascular disease than diets with a similar amount of other fats. Oleic acid is less atherogenic than that found in many saturated fats such as palmitic acid or myristic acid. High oleic oils are a reliable source of dietary monounsaturates, which reduces the level of harmful cholesterol (LDL) in the blood while maintaining serum HDL, the "good" cholesterol. As a natural alternative to saturated fats, high-oleic oil offers the health advantages of olive oil, without sacrificing the performance qualities that food processors need. Improved stability compared to most other natural oils and highly processed oils, for longer frying cycles and improved shelf life in a wide range of uses. HO oils have a consistently higher stability in food processing applications than any other commonly used natural oil. And the high oleic content, without trans-Isomers, assures customers of a healthier diet.

  • base oil in coffee whiteners and imitation dairy products
